Drama Triangle (Karpman): Persecutor, Victim, Rescuer

Karpman's Drama Triangle describes shifts among Persecutor, Victim, and Rescuer positions within recurring conflict patterns. The labels refer to interactions, not fixed kinds of people. They can prompt examination of blame, assumed helplessness, and unsolicited takeover, but do not establish hidden motives or explain every conflict.

Karpman's triangle is a lens for describing recurring interaction positions: attacking or blaming, presenting oneself as without options, and taking over another person's problem. Its distinctive feature is movement between positions. Someone who assumes an unwanted responsibility may later blame the person they helped; the accused person may respond with accusations. Describe the observable sequence before applying a label. The triangle does not establish motives, diagnose personality, or show that everyone contributes equally to a conflict.

The practical intervention is usually a change in responsibility, consent, or boundaries. Ask what task belongs to whom, what assistance is actually requested, and what each person can reasonably control. A person facing real coercion or harm may need protection, resources, or direct rescue; calling that person a triangle role would obscure the situation. David Emerald's later alternative roles are a separate teaching framework, not proof that renaming a role resolves the underlying conditions.

When to use it

When interpersonal dynamics feel stuck in repetitive, draining patterns; when helping others seems to produce dependency rather than growth; when blame and helplessness dominate team interactions; when leadership dynamics need to shift from rescuing to coaching.

How it can help

Describe the repeated behavior, clarify responsibility and power, and ask what support is wanted. Replace unwanted takeover with agreed assistance, character attacks with specific concerns, and unsupported assumptions about helplessness with a realistic account of available options. Retain direct protection and help when genuinely needed.
