Causal Loop Diagram

A visual mapping tool from systems dynamics that traces how variables influence each other in feedback loops. Arrows show the direction of influence; plus signs indicate same-direction effects (A increases → B increases) and minus signs indicate opposite-direction effects (A increases → B decreases). Reinforcing loops (all positive, or even number of negative signs) create exponential growth or decline. Balancing loops create stability. Making these loops visible reveals why systems behave counterintuitively.

When to use it

When a problem keeps recurring despite repeated fixes (suggests a balancing loop maintaining the problem); when growth seems to have a ceiling (suggests a limiting factor); when interventions produce unexpected side effects; when you need to communicate system dynamics to a team.

How it can help

When a system behaves in puzzling ways—growth stalls despite investment, problems recur despite fixes, or unintended consequences appear—draw a causal loop diagram. Map the key variables and trace how each influences the others. The act of diagramming usually reveals feedback loops that weren't visible: 'Oh, our cost-cutting is reducing quality, which reduces revenue, which triggers more cost-cutting.' Seeing the loop is the first step to breaking it.
