Mode

The most frequently occurring value in a dataset. While mean and median summarize central tendency for continuous data, mode is the only measure that works for categorical data and reveals peaks in multimodal distributions. A bimodal distribution has two peaks—suggesting two distinct populations mixed together—which mean and median would completely obscure. Mode reveals clustering that averages destroy.

When to use it

When analyzing categorical data where mean is meaningless; when distributions are bimodal or multimodal (two or more distinct groups); when designing for the 'typical' user and need to identify what typical actually means; when averages seem to describe nobody in particular.

How it can help

When your data has natural categories or clusters, mode reveals the dominant pattern. Customer purchase behavior often clusters (most common order size, most common use case, most common complaint). Mode helps you identify your 'typical' customer when averages would create a fictional composite that resembles nobody. In product design, the modal use case should drive default settings—not the average of all use cases.
