Empowerment
Giving people the authority, resources, and information to make decisions within their domain rather than requiring approval from above. True empowerment requires three conditions: (1) clear boundaries (what decisions they can make), (2) capability (skills and information to make them well), and (3) accountability (ownership of outcomes). Without all three, 'empowerment' is either chaos (authority without capability) or theater (rhetoric without actual authority).
When to use it
When organizational decision-making is too slow because everything escalates; when talented people are frustrated by lack of autonomy; when scaling requires more decision-making capacity than a single leader can provide; when designing team structures and decision rights.
How it can help
Empowerment is the primary leverage point for scaling leadership. A founder who makes every decision is the bottleneck; one who empowers effectively multiplies their capacity by the number of empowered decision-makers. The implementation sequence matters: first build capability (training, context-sharing), then grant authority (decision rights), then hold accountable (review outcomes, not just processes). Skipping to authority without capability creates expensive mistakes.
