Stress-Recovery Balance

The Stress-Recovery Balance model, derived from both exercise physiology and organizational psychology, proposes that growth and high performance require deliberate alternation between stress (demanding activity that exceeds current capacity) and recovery (restorative activity that rebuilds and adapts). The principle of supercompensation from exercise science illustrates this: a muscle grows not during the workout (stress) but during the rest period after (recovery). Without adequate stress, there's no growth stimulus; without adequate recovery, there's degradation and injury. Meijman and Mulder's Effort-Recovery Model applied this to work: psychological effort during the workday creates a need for recovery that, if met (through sleep, leisure, detachment), restores function to baseline or above. If unmet (through overwork, rumination, poor sleep), an 'incomplete recovery' accumulates, leading to chronic fatigue, health problems, and eventual burnout. Sabbatini Sonnentag's research confirmed that psychological detachment from work during off-hours is the single strongest predictor of recovery quality.

When to use it

When productivity is declining despite more hours. When chronic fatigue doesn't respond to weekends. When designing team sprint/recovery cycles. When evaluating whether burnout risk comes from too much stress or too little recovery (usually the latter).

How it can help

The model reframes recovery from luxury to necessity — like a farmer who must let fields lie fallow. For knowledge workers: design your week with deliberate stress-recovery oscillation. Intense deep work sessions must be followed by genuine recovery (not shallow work). Demanding weeks require easier weeks. Performance sprints require recovery sprints. The key metric is psychological detachment: during recovery periods, can you stop thinking about work? If not, you're not recovering regardless of physical rest. Build detachment rituals: a firm shutdown time, a physical transition between work and home, and leisure activities absorbing enough to displace work thoughts.
