Allostatic Load Theory (McEwen)

Bruce McEwen's allostatic load theory describes the cumulative physiological cost of chronic stress adaptation. While 'allostasis' is the body's adaptive response to stress (beneficial in the short term), 'allostatic load' is the wear-and-tear that accumulates when stress responses are chronically activated, inadequately shut off, or repeatedly triggered. The theory identifies four pathways to high allostatic load: repeated exposure to novel stressors, failure to habituate to repeated stressors, prolonged stress response after the stressor ends, and inadequate stress response that triggers compensatory mechanisms. High allostatic load is measured through biomarkers across multiple systems—cortisol, inflammation markers, blood pressure, waist-hip ratio, cholesterol, blood glucose—and predicts cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, immune dysfunction, and accelerated aging.

When chronic stress symptoms are accumulating despite no single overwhelming stressor. When evaluating the health cost of a demanding career trajectory. When designing personal or organizational wellness strategies. When you need biological evidence to justify boundary-setting or workload reduction.
