Values Clarification Framework
Values clarification, rooted in the work of Sidney Simon and later refined by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is the systematic process of identifying, prioritizing, and committing to the principles that define what matters most to you. Unlike goals (which are achievable and finite), values are directions—ongoing ways of being that guide behavior indefinitely. The ACT approach distinguishes chosen values (what you genuinely care about when you strip away social expectations) from compliant values (what you think you should care about). Values clarification involves identifying values across life domains (work, relationships, health, community, creativity, spirituality), assessing the gap between stated values and actual behavior, and committing to values-aligned action.
When to use it
When making major career or life decisions and needing a principled framework. When chronic dissatisfaction suggests a values-behavior misalignment. When multiple options seem equivalent and you need a differentiating criterion. When personal growth work needs a foundation beyond personality change.
How it can help
For knowledge workers, values clarification is the foundation of strategic career decisions. Use it to: (1) audit the gap between your stated values and your daily behavior—this gap is the primary source of chronic dissatisfaction, (2) use values as decision filters for career choices: does this opportunity align with my core values? (3) distinguish between your values and values you've absorbed from family, culture, or profession, (4) when facing a complex decision, clarify which values are in tension and make the trade-off explicit, (5) during burnout, check whether you've been living someone else's values rather than your own.
