Multiple Identity Integration

Multiple identity integration (MII) describes how individuals manage the relationship between their various social identities—professional, cultural, gender, ethnic, religious, political, and others. Veronica Benet-Martínez's bicultural identity integration research shows that some people experience their multiple identities as compatible and integrated ('I am both X and Y, and they complement each other') while others experience them as conflicting and compartmentalized ('When I'm being X, I can't be Y'). Higher identity integration predicts better psychological adjustment, cognitive flexibility, and creative problem-solving. The mechanism: integrated identities allow cross-pollination of perspectives and resources, while compartmentalized identities require constant switching costs and produce identity conflict.
