Logotherapy (Frankl)

Viktor Frankl's logotherapy, developed partly from his experiences in Nazi concentration camps, posits that the primary human drive is not pleasure (Freud) or power (Adler) but meaning. Frankl identified three pathways to meaning: creative values (what you give to the world through work and creation), experiential values (what you receive from the world through encounters with beauty, truth, love, and nature), and attitudinal values (the stance you take toward unavoidable suffering). The third pathway is logotherapy's most distinctive contribution: even in circumstances where creative and experiential values are impossible—illness, imprisonment, devastating loss—meaning remains available through the attitude one adopts toward suffering. This doesn't glorify suffering but recognizes that suffering without meaning is unbearable while suffering with meaning is endurable.

When to use it

When material success has not produced the expected satisfaction. When unavoidable suffering needs a meaning framework to become bearable. When helping others find purpose during adversity. When the existential question 'what's the point?' demands a substantive answer beyond 'be productive.'

How it can help

For knowledge workers, logotherapy addresses the specific existential challenge of affluent, educated professionals who have achieved material success but feel empty—Frankl's 'existential vacuum' describes this precisely. Use it to: (1) diagnose whether your dissatisfaction is hedonic (not enough pleasure), eudaimonic (not enough meaning), or both, (2) use the three pathways as a checklist: Are you creating? Are you experiencing beauty and connection? Are you finding meaning in your difficulties? (3) reframe unavoidable professional suffering (bureaucracy, politics, failure) through attitudinal values—not toxic positivity but genuine stance-taking, (4) recognize that meaning-seeking is.
