Post-Secular Spirituality

Post-secular spirituality describes the emerging cultural phenomenon where individuals and societies move beyond the binary of traditional religion vs. secular materialism into a third space that integrates spiritual seeking with critical thinking, pluralism, and individual autonomy. Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor, and others have described how the 'secularization thesis' (that modernity would eliminate religion) has proven wrong—instead, modernity has produced new forms of spirituality that are: individual rather than institutional, experiential rather than doctrinal, plural rather than exclusive, practice-centered rather than belief-centered, and compatible with scientific understanding rather than opposing it. Examples include secular Buddhism, contemplative Christianity, spiritual-but-not-religious identity, psychedelic-assisted meaning exploration, and nature-based spirituality.
