Active Recovery Science
Active recovery is the principle that certain low-intensity activities restore performance faster than complete inactivity. Originally from exercise science, the principle extends to cognitive work: after intense analytical tasks, light creative activities, physical movement, or social interaction restore mental capacity faster than passive rest. The mechanism is resource-specific—intense analytical work depletes prefrontal cortex resources while leaving other neural systems underutilized. Active recovery engages these underutilized systems, promoting whole-brain homeostasis. This explains why a walk or conversation feels restorative while scrolling social media (which still taxes attention and decision-making) does not.
When to use it
When designing break activities between work sessions. When a 'rest' period leaves you feeling more tired than before. When choosing between passive and active forms of recovery. When building a daily schedule that sustains energy across a full day.

Instead of defaulting to the phone during a work break, choose activities that engage different neural systems: physical movement, casual social interaction, light manual tasks, or sensory engagement with nature.
