Solastalgia and Environmental Grief
Solastalgia, coined by Glenn Albrecht, is distress caused by environmental change in one's home environment while still living there—homesickness experienced at home. Unlike nostalgia, solastalgia is the lived experience of watching your environment degrade. As environmental change accelerates, solastalgia is becoming widespread but unrecognized, particularly among people with strong place attachment. Environmental grief extends this to losses beyond one's home—species extinction, ecosystem collapse. Recognizing these as legitimate emotional responses enables productive processing rather than despair, denial, or paralysis.
When to use it
When experiencing unexplained sadness related to environmental changes. When managing teams who work on environmental issues and may be experiencing burnout. When counseling people in communities facing environmental degradation. When processing your own emotional response to climate change.
How it can help
For anyone experiencing emotional distress about environmental degradation but unable to name it, this model provides validation and vocabulary. Naming the experience is therapeutically significant—people who can identify solastalgia report better coping than those with unnamed distress. For leaders in environmental organizations, understanding solastalgia prevents burnout by normalizing grief responses alongside action. For therapists and coaches, it provides a framework for a growing presentation that doesn't fit standard diagnostic categories.
