Technical Debt as Compound Interest

Technical debt—shortcuts and workarounds in technology systems—compounds like financial debt. Each shortcut creates 'principal,' and the 'interest' is increased time for every subsequent change. Like compound interest, impact is nonlinear: manageable short-term but overwhelming if accumulated. Strategic technical debt (conscious shortcuts with repayment plans) can accelerate time to market, just as financial leverage accelerates growth. The problem is unintentional debt that accumulates invisibly until the system becomes unmaintainable. Ward Cunningham's original metaphor emphasized this distinction.

When to use it

When deciding whether to take a shortcut. When engineering velocity is declining despite consistent effort. When explaining refactoring needs to business stakeholders. When evaluating 'quick fix' versus proper solution costs.

How it can help

For engineering leaders: track debt explicitly, allocate 15-20% of capacity to repayment, and make conscious decisions about when to take on strategic debt. For non-technical stakeholders, the compound interest metaphor makes business impact intuitive: 'We can ship two weeks faster by taking on debt, but every future feature takes 10% longer until we repay.' This enables informed tradeoffs rather than the pattern of always choosing speed. The distinction between strategic and reckless debt is the most important concept to internalize.
