Minimum Viable Toolset Principle

The optimal number of tools is the fewest covering all essential capabilities without significant gaps. Adding tools beyond this minimum produces negative returns through complexity, context switching, maintenance burden, and integration overhead. Most knowledge workers accumulate tools far beyond the minimum: multiple project managers, overlapping note systems, redundant communication channels. Each addition has learning cost, maintenance cost, switching cost, and integration cost with diminishing marginal capability. The counterintuitive insight: removing tools often improves productivity more than adding them, because constraint breeds mastery and mastery of fewer tools beats superficial use of many.
