Accusation Audit
An accusation audit is a pre-emptive technique where you list every negative thing the other party might be thinking about you or your proposal—and say it yourself before they do. 'You're probably thinking we're being unreasonable. You might feel like we don't value this relationship. You may think we're just trying to squeeze every dollar.' By voicing these accusations first, you accomplish several things simultaneously: you demonstrate self-awareness and courage, you take the sting out of criticisms by naming them, and you trigger the other party to actually moderate their position ('No, it's not that bad...'). The technique works because unspoken negative thoughts gain power through suppression, while named thoughts lose their emotional charge.
When to use it
Before delivering bad news, making a difficult request, or presenting a proposal you expect will face resistance. When you know the other party has negative perceptions about you or your organization. When re-engaging after a mistake or broken commitment.
How it can help
Before any high-stakes meeting where you expect resistance, list every negative perception the other party might have. Then open the conversation by naming them. 'Before we begin, I know you might think this proposal doesn't adequately consider your team's workload...' This defuses objections before they solidify into positions. The technique is especially powerful in sales presentations, investor pitches, difficult employee conversations, and client meetings about scope changes or price increases. It also works in personal contexts: 'I know you might feel like I'm not being fair here' opens a conversation far more effectively than defending against an accusation you can see coming.
