Pre-Suasion (Cialdini)

Pre-suasion is the practice of arranging for recipients to be receptive to your message before they encounter it. Robert Cialdini's research shows that what you do in the moment before making a request or presenting an argument dramatically affects how it's received. The mechanism works through attentional priming: whatever concept is focal in people's minds at the moment of decision disproportionately influences that decision. Asking people 'Do you consider yourself adventurous?' before pitching them a novel product increases acceptance because it makes their adventurous self-concept salient. Showing images of achievement before asking for commitment increases follow-through. The pre-suasion window is brief—it works in the seconds to minutes before the key moment, not hours or days.

When to use it

In the minutes before making an important request, pitch, or presentation. When designing the opening sequence of meetings, presentations, or sales conversations. When you want to shift someone's mindset before a critical decision point.

How it can help

Before any important request, presentation, or pitch, engineer the preceding moment. If you want someone to agree to a challenging project, first discuss a time they successfully took on a challenge. If you're pitching an innovative product, prime your audience with stories about breakthroughs and pioneers. If you want a favorable price, set the physical or conversational environment to evoke quality and premium value. In sales, the questions you ask before presenting your solution shape how the solution is perceived. In meetings, the first agenda items and opening remarks create a frame that colors everything that follows.
