Conflicts of Interest Detection

A conflict of interest exists when a person's professional judgment or duty is compromised by a competing personal interest—financial gain, career advancement, loyalty to friends, or desire to avoid discomfort. The critical insight is that conflicts of interest corrupt judgment unconsciously: research by Don Moore and Max Bazerman shows that people with conflicts of interest genuinely believe they're being objective even when their advice is measurably biased. Auditors who own stock in companies they audit don't think they're compromised—but they produce systematically more favorable audits. The three levels of conflict are: potential (a situation that could create bias), actual (a situation where bias is operating), and perceived (a reasonable observer would believe bias exists, whether or not it actually does).

When to use it

Before giving or receiving advice that could be influenced by competing interests. When designing organizational structures to prevent bias in consequential decisions. When evaluating whether a recommendation from an advisor, partner, or service provider might be compromised.

How it can help

Build a personal conflict-of-interest inventory: where do your financial interests, personal relationships, or career aspirations potentially compromise your professional judgment? Most people identify zero conflicts because the bias is unconscious—so be aggressive in your search. When advising others, disclose any conflict before giving advice, even if you believe it doesn't affect your judgment—it almost certainly does, and disclosure allows others to discount appropriately.
