Thermic Effect of Food
The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the energy your body expends to digest, absorb, and process nutrients—typically 10% of total caloric intake, but varying dramatically by macronutrient. Protein costs 20-35% of its calories to process, carbohydrates 5-15%, and fat only 0-5%. This means 100 calories of chicken breast yields only ~75 usable calories, while 100 calories of butter yields ~97. TEF also varies by food processing level: whole foods require more digestive work than ultra-processed equivalents. A whole apple has higher TEF than apple juice with equivalent calories.
