Nutritional Psychiatry
Nutritional psychiatry examines how dietary patterns directly affect mental health through neurotransmitter synthesis, neuroinflammation, gut-brain signaling, oxidative stress, and epigenetic modification. The SMILES trial (Jacka et al., 2017) demonstrated that dietary improvement—shifting toward Mediterranean-style eating—produced remission in 32% of moderate-to-severe depression cases versus 8% for social support control, with a number needed to treat of 4.1, comparable to many antidepressants. Nutritional deficiencies in omega-3s, zinc, magnesium, B-vitamins, and vitamin D consistently correlate with depression and anxiety across populations. The field challenges the artificial separation between psychiatric and nutritional approaches to mental health.
When to use it
When mood or cognitive symptoms persist despite adequate sleep and exercise. When exploring adjunctive approaches to mental health treatment. When evaluating root causes of team-wide energy or mood issues. When dietary quality has been neglected during high-stress periods.
How it can help
For knowledge workers, this adds a critical lever to mental health management. If experiencing persistent low mood, anxiety, or cognitive sluggishness, evaluate dietary quality before or alongside other interventions. Ensure adequate omega-3s (fatty fish or supplement), magnesium (leafy greens, nuts), B-vitamins (whole grains, legumes), and vitamin D (sunlight or supplement). The cost and risk of improving diet are minimal compared to pharmaceutical interventions. Leaders should recognize that team mental health is partly a nutrition problem—workplace food environments directly affect collective psychological function.
