Habit Loop Model (Duhigg)

Charles Duhigg's habit loop identifies three components: a cue (trigger initiating behavior), a routine (the behavior itself), and a reward (benefit reinforcing the loop). The key insight: habits can only be modified by keeping the same cue and reward while inserting a different routine—the 'Golden Rule of Habit Change.' If the cue is afternoon boredom and the reward is social stimulation, walking to the break room for cookies can be replaced with walking to a colleague's desk. The neurological basis lies in the basal ganglia, which automates repeated behaviors into 'chunks' bypassing conscious decision-making. This explains why habits persist even when we consciously want to change—they operate below deliberate thought.
