Implementation Intentions (Gollwitzer)
Implementation intentions are specific if-then plans linking a situational cue to a planned response: 'If X arises, then I will do Y.' Peter Gollwitzer's research demonstrates this roughly doubles follow-through probability. A meta-analysis of 94 studies found a medium-to-large effect (d=0.65) across health, academic, and goal achievement domains. The mechanism: pre-loading the decision so the planned response activates automatically when the situation occurs, bypassing deliberation that allows procrastination or rationalization. 'If it is Monday at 7am, then I will go to the gym' outperforms 'I intend to exercise more' because it specifies when, where, and what, offloading the decision from willpower-dependent System 2 to cue-triggered System 1.
When to use it
When intentions aren't converting to actions. When procrastinating on important but effortful tasks. When building new routines. When wanting a simple technique that dramatically improves follow-through without requiring additional motivation.
How it can help
Convert every important intention into implementation intention format. Instead of 'I should network more,' write 'If I attend a conference session, then I will introduce myself to one person before leaving.' Instead of 'I need deep work,' write 'If it is 9am on weekdays, then I close email and work on my top priority for 90 minutes.' Research shows implementation intentions are especially effective for unpleasant tasks—exactly what knowledge workers procrastinate on most. For entrepreneurs, embedding these into team processes reduces coordination overhead.
