Modern examples: staking money at StickK (forfeit to a despised charity if you fail), deleting social media apps, publicly announcing goals to leverage reputation, automating savings transfers before you see money. Thomas Schelling formalized the concept: a commitment device is rational precisely because it acknowledges irrationality—your present self knows your future self will act against your interests, so you preemptively constrain future choices.

When you know what to do but repeatedly fail to follow through. When present-self and future-self have conflicting interests (eating, spending, working). When procrastination costs are high but consequences are delayed. When designing systems that need to function despite human weakness.
