Dopamine Reward Prediction Error

Wolfram Schultz discovered that dopamine signals the difference between expected and actual rewards, not pleasure itself. Better-than-expected rewards produce dopamine spikes (strengthening the behavior). Expected rewards produce flat dopamine. Worse-than-expected rewards produce dopamine dips (weakening the behavior). This explains why novelty motivates (new rewards exceed zero expectation), habits feel less rewarding over time (expectation matches reality), and variable rewards are more compelling than fixed ones (unpredictability maintains prediction error). Drugs of abuse hijack this system with supraphysiological surges that overwhelm natural reward calibration.
