Bundling and Unbundling
Bundling combines products or services into a package; unbundling makes components available separately. Pure bundling offers only the package, while mixed bundling also permits individual purchases. These structures affect customer choice, coordination costs, pricing, and competition. Technology can change their relative appeal without producing an inevitable cycle.
A bundle changes the unit of choice: instead of selecting each component separately, a buyer purchases a package. A pure bundle is offered only as a package; a mixed bundle is available alongside individual components. This can reduce coordination costs or accommodate different willingness to pay, but it can also make customers purchase features they do not want.
Unbundling restores component-level choice while potentially increasing search, integration, and billing work. The decision therefore depends on which costs move from seller to buyer and whether components actually complement one another. Lower distribution costs do not determine the winner by themselves. Compare the whole customer task, including unwanted features, switching friction, and the effort required to assemble an alternative.
When to use it
When deciding how to package services, evaluating subscriptions, comparing integrated and component offerings, or examining how changing costs and customer preferences affect an existing package.
How it can help
Compare which components customers need, what integration provides, and what separate purchasing would require. Test package and standalone options with complete prices and delivery costs rather than assuming that a fragmented market needs bundling or an established bundle needs dismantling.
