T-Shaped Professional

The T-shaped professional has deep expertise in one domain (vertical stroke) combined with broad knowledge across disciplines (horizontal stroke). Popularized by Tim Brown at IDEO, it describes the ideal innovation team member: someone contributing deep technical skill while collaborating across disciplines. The vertical bar represents mastery—the skill making you indispensable. The horizontal bar represents empathy and versatility—understanding other functions well enough to collaborate and connect ideas. Organizations of T-shaped people outperform those with pure specialists (I-shaped) or pure generalists (dash-shaped) because they combine depth with cross-pollination.

When to use it

When designing your professional development plan, evaluating team composition, making hiring decisions, or deciding whether to go deeper in your specialty versus broadening into adjacent areas. Particularly useful at the 3-5 year mark when initial depth is established.

How it can help

Use this as a professional development roadmap. Early career: focus on building the vertical bar (deep expertise). Mid-career: deliberately broaden the horizontal bar through cross-functional projects and interdisciplinary learning. For hiring managers, evaluate candidates for both depth and breadth. For team composition, ensure T-shaped people whose verticals cover different domains but whose horizontals overlap for communication. Audit your own profile: is your vertical deep enough to be distinctive? Is your horizontal broad enough to collaborate?
