Autocatalysis
An autocatalytic reaction is a chemical reaction in which a product or intermediate also functions as a catalyst. Its rate may increase as the relevant catalytic species accumulates, subject to reaction conditions and available reactants. It is not the mechanism behind every exponential growth process.
In chemistry, an autocatalytic reaction includes a product or intermediate that also acts as a catalyst. This is more specific than saying good results lead to more good results. Identify the process producing the output and the role that output plays in changing the rate of further production. Reactant availability and other conditions still constrain the trajectory.
Outside chemistry, use the term as a declared feedback analogy. A software improvement may make later improvements easier, but that claim requires observing the actual enabling link. Faster growth alone could instead reflect more spending or a larger audience. Do not classify every exponential curve, compounding account, or favorable cycle as chemical autocatalysis.
When to use it
When designing business models that need self-reinforcing growth; when building personal or organizational flywheels; when evaluating whether a growth strategy has genuine positive feedback dynamics or is linear; when understanding why some systems accelerate while others plateau.
How it can help
For a nonchemical analogy, identify the specific output that helps enable further production and test that link. Distinguish internal feedback from additional outside resources, and check limits and costs.
