Inquiry-Based Learning
Instruction structured around questions and investigation rather than content delivery. A spectrum exists: structured inquiry (teacher provides question and method), guided inquiry (teacher provides question, students design method), open inquiry (students generate everything). The cycle: questioning, investigating, creating explanations from evidence, discussing findings with peers, reflecting and identifying new questions. The mechanism: inquiry generates intrinsic motivation and deeper understanding because knowledge constructed through investigation is more durable than received knowledge. Effect sizes: 0.4-0.6 for science, 0.3-0.5 for general critical thinking.
When to use it
When developing critical thinking and reasoning skills, when learners need to understand processes (how and why) not just facts, when engagement is low in content-heavy instruction, or when preparing learners for novel problems without predetermined answers.
How it can help
For training designers: present questions and guide investigation rather than delivering answers. For managers: facilitate question-driven investigation for complex problems. For self-learners: structure learning around genuine questions, not prescribed topics. Practically: (1) start with a compelling question, (2) provide resources for investigation, (3) require evidence-based conclusions, (4) build in peer discussion. Begin structured and gradually increase autonomy.
