Experiential Learning Cycle (Kolb)
David Kolb describes learning as four stages: (1) Concrete Experience—engaging directly; (2) Reflective Observation—stepping back to reflect from multiple perspectives; (3) Abstract Conceptualization—forming theories explaining patterns; (4) Active Experimentation—testing concepts in new situations, restarting the cycle. Effective learning requires all four stages. Most people prefer certain stages and skip others: an engineer might jump from experience to theory (skipping reflection); a philosopher might reflect endlessly without experimenting. The cycle's power is completeness—genuine learning requires doing, reflecting, theorizing, AND testing.
When to use it
When designing learning that must produce applicable skills, when learners have experience but aren't extracting lessons, when theoretical training isn't translating to practice, or when diagnosing why your own learning isn't producing results.
How it can help
Design complete learning experiences: (1) start with concrete experience (simulation, case study), (2) facilitate reflection ('what happened? what surprised you?'), (3) extract principles ('what general lesson?'), (4) apply in a new context. For self-learning: audit which stages you skip. Read but never apply? Missing experimentation. Try things but never reflect? Missing observation. For managers: debrief projects using all four stages rather than jumping project to project.
