Backward-Engineered Expertise (Expert-Novice Research)

Expert-novice research reveals systematic cognitive differences: (1) experts perceive meaningful patterns where novices see random details; (2) experts organize knowledge around deep principles, novices around surface features; (3) experts have automated basic procedures, freeing resources for higher-order thinking; (4) experts self-monitor more frequently; (5) experts' knowledge is conditional—they know not just what but when and why. The instructional implication: instead of teaching expert performance (visible tip), teach the underlying cognitive structures (invisible base) that produce it.

When to use it

When designing training to accelerate expertise, when understanding why experienced practitioners outperform novices, when capturing institutional knowledge from retiring experts, or when structuring deliberate practice.

How it can help

For training designers: reverse-engineer target expertise. Interview experts to uncover mental models and decision rules, then build instruction developing those cognitive structures. For knowledge workers: focus on deep structure (principles, patterns, conditional knowledge) rather than surface procedures. Practically: (1) study how experts perceive and categorize problems, (2) practice pattern recognition, (3) develop conditional knowledge ('when X, use Y because Z'), (4) practice metacognition regularly.
