Teaching for Transfer
Transfer—applying knowledge from one context to new ones—is education's ultimate goal and persistent failure. Near transfer (similar contexts) occurs naturally; far transfer (different contexts) is rare and requires deliberate design. Conditions promoting transfer: (1) learning principles rather than surface procedures; (2) practicing in multiple varied contexts building flexible knowledge; (3) explicit abstraction—extracting general principles from specific examples; (4) metacognitive strategies recognizing when prior knowledge applies; (5) analogical reasoning systematically comparing domains. Without deliberate design, most learning stays context-bound.
When to use it
When training produces practice-setting competence but not real-world application, when learners treat each problem as novel despite relevant knowledge, when designing curricula for broadly applicable thinking, or when 'well-trained' employees can't handle novelty.
How it can help
If your goal is transfer, design for it explicitly—it doesn't happen automatically. Practically: (1) teach principles, not just procedures ('This works because...' not just 'Do this'), (2) use multiple diverse examples, (3) practice applying the same principle in different contexts, (4) ask learners to identify connections across problems, (5) train metacognitive awareness ('Where else might this apply?'). For self-learners: after learning something, immediately ask 'Where else could this apply?' and practice in a different domain.
