Arthashastra Statecraft (Kautilya)

The Arthashastra (c. 4th century BCE) is the most comprehensive ancient treatise on governance and strategic management. Key frameworks: seven elements of state (king, ministers, territory, fortifications, treasury, army, allies); four diplomatic expedients (conciliation, gifts, sowing dissent, force); and the saptanga model of state power. Kautilya argues material prosperity (artha) is the foundation of all goods — without a strong treasury, neither dharma nor welfare is possible. The text predates Machiavelli by 1,800 years and is arguably more systematic.

When to use it

When building or assessing organizational structure with a comprehensive framework. When choosing among negotiation approaches. When facing complex challenges requiring simultaneous attention to multiple structural elements.

How it can help

The seven elements map to modern organizations: leadership (king), management (ministers), market position (territory), infrastructure (fortifications), capital (treasury), capabilities (army), partnerships (allies). Weakness in any element destabilizes the whole. The four diplomatic expedients are universal: try persuasion first, then incentives, then division, then force as last resort. Use the saptanga framework to audit organizational health — which pillars are strong, weak, or neglected?
