Jugaad (Frugal Innovation)

Jugaad describes creating innovative solutions with minimal resources by improvising, repurposing, and working around constraints. It emerged from navigating inadequate infrastructure and limited capital in the Indian subcontinent. Examples range from village inventions to corporate strategies (Tata Nano's radical cost engineering, Aravind Eye Care's assembly-line cataract surgery at 1% of Western costs). Three principles: seek opportunity in adversity, do more with less, think and act flexibly.

When to use it

When operating under severe resource constraints. When established competitors have more resources but less agility. When bureaucratic processes block progress. When 'best practices' assume resource levels you don't have.

How it can help

Essential when resources are scarce. Entrepreneurs can achieve market entry at radically lower cost than incumbents assume possible. The key practice: 'How can I solve this WITHOUT the resource I think I need?' This reveals solutions invisible to resource-rich competitors. Don't ask 'How do we reduce costs by 20%?' but 'How do we deliver world-class outcomes at 1/100th the cost?' Knowledge workers: deliver results with fewer resources rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
