Circle of Life Framework (Cyclical vs. Linear Time)
Numerous Indigenous traditions across North America, Africa, and Asia conceptualize time, life, and natural processes as cyclical rather than linear. The Lakota Medicine Wheel, the Aztec calendar stone, the West African Akan concept of sankofa-time, and Aboriginal Australian Dreamtime all express versions of this principle: reality moves in circles, seasons, and spirals rather than along a progressive line from past to future. In this framework, endings are also beginnings, death feeds life, winter prepares spring, and the 'past' is not behind us but beneath us, continuously present as the foundation of the current moment. The circle also represents interconnection: all elements of existence (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual; or earth, water, fire, air) are equally important points on the circle, with none hierarchically superior. This stands in sharp contrast to the Western linear progress narrative where the future is always better than the past.

When linear progress assumptions are creating blind spots. When organizations or individuals are in a decline phase and need to reframe it as part of a natural cycle. When strategic planning needs to account for cyclical patterns rather than assuming linear growth.
