Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions
Geert Hofstede's framework identifies six dimensions along which national cultures systematically vary: Power Distance (acceptance of unequal power), Individualism vs. Collectivism, Masculinity vs. Femininity (competition vs. cooperation), Uncertainty Avoidance (tolerance for ambiguity), Long-Term vs. Short-Term Orientation, and Indulgence vs. Restraint. Derived from a landmark IBM survey of 100,000+ employees across 70+ countries, later expanded with World Values Survey data. Each dimension is scored 0-100 per country, enabling quantitative cross-cultural comparison. The model reveals that behaviors often attributed to personality are frequently cultural programming operating at the collective level.
When to use it
When designing products, negotiations, management practices, or communications for multiple national cultures. Essential for multinational team management, international marketing, and expatriate preparation. Use when cultural friction emerges and you need a diagnostic framework rather than stereotyping.
How it can help
Transforms vague intuitions about cultural difference into measurable dimensions. Before a negotiation with Japanese partners, checking their high Uncertainty Avoidance score (92) explains the emphasis on detailed contracts. When an American startup expands to Sweden, the low Masculinity score (5) predicts aggressive sales tactics will backfire. HR teams use it to design expatriate training: an employee moving from low Power Distance Denmark to high Power Distance Malaysia needs coaching on hierarchical communication. Prevents costly misattributions -- what looks like indecisiveness in a high Uncertainty Avoidance culture is thoroughness.
