GLOBE Cultural Framework
The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project extends Hofstede by measuring nine cultural dimensions across 62 societies, crucially distinguishing between cultural values ('should be') and cultural practices ('as is'). The nine dimensions include Performance Orientation, Assertiveness, Future Orientation, Humane Orientation, Institutional Collectivism, In-Group Collectivism, Gender Egalitarianism, Power Distance, and Uncertainty Avoidance. GLOBE also identifies six culturally endorsed leadership profiles. A key finding: values and practices often inversely correlate -- societies scoring low on a practice often score high on the value, revealing aspirational gaps between cultural reality and ideals.
When to use it
When Hofstede's six dimensions feel too coarse, especially for leadership development, organizational design, or market-entry strategy. Use when you need to distinguish between what a culture practices versus what it aspires to. Particularly valuable for leadership selection across cultures and understanding why reform movements emerge.
How it can help
The values-practices split is uniquely powerful. When entering a market where Gender Egalitarianism practices are low but values are high, you know there is latent demand for egalitarian messaging. Leadership selection becomes data-informed: in societies scoring high on Team-Oriented leadership endorsement, a lone-wolf CEO will face resistance. The nine dimensions capture nuances Hofstede misses, like the distinction between institutional collectivism (societal resource sharing) and in-group collectivism (family loyalty), which differ markedly in countries like the United States.
