Cultural Translation Framework

Cultural translation addresses making concepts and practices legible across cultural boundaries. Drawing on Homi Bhabha's 'third space,' it recognizes meaning is transformed in transit, creating hybrid forms belonging fully to neither source nor target culture. Three levels: surface translation (language and etiquette), structural translation (converting institutional forms -- adapting Western HR for patron-client cultures), and deep translation (making worldview assumptions explicit -- converting individualist 'rights' into relational 'obligations' achieving the same protective function). Effective translation requires what Clifford Geertz called 'thick description' -- understanding not just what people do but what they think they are doing.

When to use it

When adapting any practice, product, or institution for a different cultural context. When surface-level adaptation (changing language, images) has failed and deeper structural misalignment persists. When mediating between cultural communities within a single organization or society.

How it can help

Prevents two common failures: naive universalism ('our system works everywhere') and romantic relativism ('too different to engage with'). When a multinational implements 'speak-up culture' in a high power distance plant, cultural translation redesigns it as structured reporting through trusted intermediaries -- achieving safety outcomes through culturally appropriate means. International development organizations use this to adapt public health campaigns: translating germ theory into local frameworks rather than replacing them. The three-level model prevents assuming translation is complete when only surface adaptation is done.
