Creolization (Cultural Mixing)

Originally describing how pidgin languages develop into full creole languages, creolization became a theory of cultural contact through Edouard Glissant. When cultures meet under conditions of inequality (colonialism, migration, globalization), they generate genuinely new forms irreducible to their components. Jazz is not 'African + European music' but a third thing born from their interaction under specific conditions. Key insight: creolization is unpredictable -- outcomes cannot be deduced from inputs. Unlike 'melting pot' metaphors implying homogenization, creolization preserves traces of originating cultures while producing irreducible novelty through actual contact, friction, and creative recombination.
