Story as Theory (Narrative as Analytical Framework)

In many Indigenous traditions, stories serve the function that theories and models serve in Western academia -- explaining why things happen, predicting outcomes, and guiding action. Thomas King (Cherokee/Greek): 'The truth about stories is that that's all we are.' A well-crafted story encodes causal mechanisms, conditional relationships, and ethical implications in a form simultaneously memorable, emotionally engaging, and contextually rich. Unlike Western theories striving for abstraction, story-theories maintain particular contexts and characters, trusting listeners to extract principles through analogy. Coyote stories encode complex lessons through narrative scenarios rather than propositions.

When to use it

When abstract models fail to capture a situation's complexity. When communicating insights that audiences need to internalize, not just receive. When preserving organizational knowledge including tacit and contextual elements. When evaluating non-Western knowledge claims presented in narrative form.

How it can help

Explains why storytelling is the most effective teaching method across cultures. Stories encode more than propositions: a failed-negotiation story contains facts, emotional dynamics, context, and moral implications simultaneously. For leaders, the most effective way to transmit complex understanding is through crafted narratives, not bullet points. For analysts, some phenomena (human motivation, cultural dynamics, historical contingency) are better understood through narrative than models. Business schools use cases, medicine uses vignettes, philosophy uses thought experiments.
