Chain of Custody Logic
Chain of custody is the documented trail showing who possessed a piece of evidence, when, and what they did with it — from collection to courtroom presentation. If any link in the chain is broken (evidence was left unattended, handling wasn't documented, storage conditions were inadequate), the evidence may be excluded or its weight diminished. Practitioners understand this as more than a procedural requirement: it's an epistemological principle about the reliability of information. The chain answers the question 'how do we know this evidence hasn't been altered, contaminated, or fabricated?' Every transfer point is a potential vulnerability. In the digital age, chain of custody has become enormously more complex — electronic evidence can be copied, metadata can be altered, and establishing the authenticity of a digital file requires forensic tools and expert testimony.
When to use it
When evaluating the reliability of evidence or data, designing systems for maintaining information integrity, investigating where errors or contamination may have entered a process, or establishing trust in information that will be used for high-stakes decisions.
How it can help
This model applies to any situation where the integrity of information matters. In data science, chain of custody thinking asks: where did this dataset come from, who cleaned it, what transformations were applied, and could errors have been introduced at any point? In journalism, it asks: who is the source, through how many intermediaries has this information passed, and could it have been distorted in transmission? In supply chain management, it tracks materials from source to consumer. Any time you need to trust information, asking 'what's the chain of custody?' reveals potential corruption points.
