Systems Integration Testing

Systems integration testing (SIT) verifies that individually tested components work correctly when combined into a complete system. A rocket engine may test perfectly on the stand, but fail when integrated with the fuel delivery system, guidance electronics, and structural components because of interface mismatches, electromagnetic interference, thermal interactions, or timing issues that don't exist in isolated testing. SIT proceeds through defined levels: component testing (does each part work alone?), subsystem integration (do related parts work together?), system integration (does the complete system work?), and acceptance testing (does it work in its operational environment?). The practitioner's hard lesson: most integration failures occur at interfaces between components designed by different teams.

When to use it

When combining independently developed components into a larger system, when different teams must coordinate to deliver a result, before deploying any system that has been built in pieces, or when diagnosing failures that only appear when components are combined.

How it can help

Integration testing logic applies to any situation where components designed or managed independently must work together. In organizations, departments may each function well internally but fail at handoffs — sales makes promises that operations can't fulfill, marketing attracts customers that support can't serve. In mergers and acquisitions, each company may be excellent independently, but integration fails because cultures, systems, and processes don't mesh. The key lesson: testing individual components is necessary but insufficient. You must test the interfaces, the handoffs, the assumptions that different parts make about each other.
