Prototype-Test-Iterate Cycle
The prototype-test-iterate cycle is the engineering practice of building a rough version of a solution, testing it against real-world conditions, learning from the results, and refining the design — repeatedly. Each iteration increases fidelity and decreases uncertainty. Early prototypes are deliberately crude (cardboard mockups, paper models, breadboard circuits) because the goal is to learn quickly and cheaply, not to demonstrate quality. Testing must be against real conditions, not idealized ones — a prototype tested only in the lab may fail in the field because the lab doesn't reproduce dirt, vibration, human error, or temperature extremes.
When to use it
When developing any new product, process, or solution under uncertainty; when theory needs to be validated against practice; when you need to learn quickly and cheaply before committing to expensive, irreversible decisions; or when existing approaches need improvement through systematic experimentation.
How it can help
This cycle is the core learning loop for any domain where theory and practice diverge — which is most domains. In strategy, a 'prototype' is a pilot program or market test. In organizational change, it's a small-scale trial in one department before company-wide rollout. In personal skill development, it's deliberate practice with specific, testable goals. The model teaches three critical disciplines: (1) build the minimum needed to learn, not the maximum you can, (2) test against real conditions, not idealized ones, and (3) each iteration must change something based on what you learned — cycling without adapting is just repetition.
