Human Factors Engineering

Human factors engineering (ergonomics) designs systems, products, and environments to match human cognitive, physical, and perceptual capabilities and limitations — rather than expecting humans to adapt to poorly designed systems. The field emerged from WWII aviation, where identical-looking controls for landing gear and flaps led pilots to retract their landing gear on the ground instead of their flaps. The fix wasn't 'train pilots better' — it was redesigning controls so they couldn't be confused (flap controls were made flat like a flap, gear controls were round like a wheel). Modern human factors addresses cognitive workload (how much information can an operator process?), situation awareness (does the operator understand the current system state?), decision support (does the interface help or hinder good decisions?), and error prevention (does the design make errors difficult to.

When to use it

When human errors are recurring despite training and motivation, designing any system that will be operated by humans under stress or time pressure, evaluating whether errors are caused by individual failure or system design, or improving the interface between people and complex systems.

Human factors thinking reframes all human error as design failure — a paradigm shift that transforms how you approach any system involving people. When employees make mistakes, the human factors response is 'how does the system make this error easy to make?' not 'how do we punish or retrain the person?' This leads to fundamentally different solutions: redesigning forms so fields can't be confused, adding confirmation steps before irreversible actions, standardizing critical procedures. In software, it drives UX principles like progressive disclosure, error prevention, and undo functionality.
