Therapeutic Frame (Boundaries and Structure)
The therapeutic frame is the set of boundaries, rules, and structures that define the therapy relationship: session length, frequency, location, fee arrangements, cancellation policies, limits on out-of-session contact, confidentiality rules, and the therapist's role (helper, not friend). The frame creates a predictable, safe container within which the unpredictable, often chaotic work of therapy can occur. Violations of the frame — a therapist running sessions overtime, reducing fees without discussion, accepting gifts, engaging in social contact outside therapy — aren't just ethical violations; they're clinical signals. The practitioner's key insight: how the frame is managed IS therapeutic information. A client who consistently arrives late may be expressing ambivalence about therapy. A client who asks the therapist personal questions may be testing whether the relationship is safe.
When to use it
When establishing professional relationships that need clear boundaries, when boundary violations are occurring and you need to understand their meaning, when designing structures for ongoing relationships (coaching, mentoring, consulting), or when feeling pressure to relax boundaries for 'good reasons' that may actually signal problems.
How it can help
Frame thinking applies to any professional relationship where maintaining clear boundaries is essential for effective functioning. In management, the 'frame' includes role boundaries (I'm your manager, not your friend), meeting structures (regular 1-on-1s with consistent format), and communication norms (email for routine matters, phone for urgent ones). When the frame is clear, deviations become meaningful data: an employee who suddenly misses 1-on-1s may be disengaging. In consulting, the engagement frame (scope, deliverables, payment terms) prevents scope creep and relationship confusion. The model teaches that boundaries aren't obstacles to connection — they're prerequisites for it.
