Attachment-Based Therapy Principles
Attachment-based therapy applies Bowlby's attachment theory to clinical practice, understanding psychological distress through the lens of disrupted attachment relationships. The core premise is that humans are biologically wired to seek proximity to attachment figures when threatened, and that early experiences with caregivers create internal working models — templates for how relationships function. When these models are insecure (caregivers were inconsistent, rejecting, or frightening), the person develops characteristic defensive strategies: anxious attachment (hyperactivating — clinging, monitoring, protest behaviors) or avoidant attachment (deactivating — emotional suppression, compulsive self-reliance, dismissing the importance of relationships). Therapy provides a 'secure base' from which the client can explore painful experiences that were too threatening to process alone.
When to use it
When relationship patterns — at work or home — seem to follow repetitive, unsatisfying scripts; when someone's response to relationship stress seems disproportionate or patterned; when building trust in new relationships and need to understand the other person's relational template; or when leading through uncertainty and need to provide appropriate 'secure base' functioning.
How it can help
Attachment principles illuminate relationship dynamics far beyond therapy. In organizations, leaders function as attachment figures for their teams — and their availability, consistency, and responsiveness (or lack thereof) directly affect team functioning. A manager whose responses are unpredictable creates anxious attachment dynamics in their team (constant checking, fear of abandonment during reorganizations). Understanding attachment patterns helps explain why some people are chronically self-reliant to a fault (avoidant attachment at work), while others need constant reassurance (anxious attachment at work).
