Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Framework

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), created by Marsha Linehan, teaches four skill modules designed to address the core deficits in emotion regulation that drive self-destructive behavior. Mindfulness: observing and describing internal experience without judgment, creating space between stimulus and response. Distress Tolerance: surviving crisis moments without making things worse — radical acceptance, self-soothing, distraction, and TIPP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Progressive relaxation). Emotion Regulation: understanding emotions, reducing vulnerability to emotional reactivity (PLEASE skills: Physical health, eating, avoiding substances, Sleep, Exercise), and building positive experiences. Interpersonal Effectiveness: asserting needs while maintaining relationships — DEAR MAN (Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, Negotiate).

In leadership, modeling this.
