Prognostic disclosure is the clinical art of communicating likely future outcomes — life expectancy, functional decline, treatment response — with honesty calibrated to the patient's readiness and needs. Research shows physicians systematically overestimate prognosis (by roughly 30%) and patients simultaneously overestimate their physicians' accuracy. Practitioners learn to use ranges rather than point estimates ('months to a year' not 'six months'), to distinguish population statistics from individual prediction, and to offer information in layers: headline first ('this is serious'), then details as the patient signals readiness.
