Center of Gravity Analysis (Clausewitz's Schwerpunkt)
Clausewitz identified the 'center of gravity' as the source of power providing moral or physical strength, freedom of action, or will to act—the hub on which everything depends. Identifying and attacking the enemy's center of gravity while protecting your own is the fundamental strategic problem. This might be an army, a capital, a leader, public opinion, or an alliance. The practitioner challenge is that centers shift: Napoleon's was his army, while Vietnam's was political will (nearly indestructible by military means). Modern doctrine distinguishes strategic, operational, and tactical centers of gravity.
When to use it
When developing competitive strategy and need to focus limited resources. When trying to understand why an obstacle persists despite multiple attacks. When planning organizational change and need to identify the critical enabler or blocker. When analyzing why a previous strategy failed.
How it can help
Center of gravity analysis prevents dissipating effort across many targets instead of concentrating on the one that matters most. In business, it forces the question: what is the single source of our competitor's strength—brand, distribution, talent, cash reserves? Resistance to organizational change also has a center of gravity. Identifying and addressing that center is more efficient than fighting every symptom separately.
