Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB)

IPB is a four-step analytical methodology: define the area of operations, describe environmental effects (terrain, weather, demographics), evaluate threat capabilities and doctrine, and determine threat courses of action. The critical output is 'named areas of interest' and 'decision points'—specific conditions that indicate which enemy course of action is unfolding, triggering pre-planned responses. This transforms reactive decision-making into proactive recognition-response pairing. The methodology is standard across U.S. military intelligence operations.

When to use it

Before entering any competitive situation requiring environmental and opponent understanding. When preparing for complex negotiations, market entries, or competitive responses. When transforming reactive decision-making into proactive recognition-response patterns. When information volume overwhelms and you need structured analysis.

How it can help

IPB provides transferable methodology for competitive preparation. For market entry: define competitive space, assess environmental factors, evaluate each competitor's capabilities, and develop early warning indicators. The named-area-of-interest concept is powerful: instead of monitoring everything, identify specific signals indicating which competitive scenario is unfolding. Sales teams can use IPB for complex deals: understand the decision landscape, identify stakeholders, assess competitor positioning, and prepare branch plans.
