Mental Models of Student Thinking (Diagnosing Misconceptions)

Expert teaching requires understanding not just what students don't know, but what they do think—including systematic misconceptions interfering with learning. Physics students believe objects in motion require continuous force; economics students believe trade is zero-sum. These aren't random errors but coherent (if incorrect) models resistant to simple correction. Lee Shulman called this 'pedagogical content knowledge.' The skill is diagnosing which misconception a student holds, then designing experiences creating cognitive conflict with that misconception.

When to use it

When trainees consistently make the same errors despite instruction. When clear explanations fail to stick and learners revert. When designing training where common misconceptions exist. When mentoring someone whose confidence exceeds competence—likely an incorrect but coherent model.

How it can help

Understanding student mental models transforms teaching from information delivery to cognitive restructuring. The biggest learning barrier is often incorrect prior beliefs, not ignorance. The employee who 'already knows' but holds a subtly wrong model is harder to teach than a blank slate. This explains why clear explanations fail: learners assimilate new information into incorrect frameworks. The solution: surface existing models, create experiences revealing their inadequacy, then present correct models as resolution.
