Supercompensation Theory (The Adaptation Wave)
The body's training response follows a wave: stimulus causes fatigue and decline, recovery returns to baseline, then a temporary supercompensation window exceeds baseline, followed by return to baseline without further stimulus. The art is timing the next stimulus to the supercompensation window. Train too soon (during recovery) and fatigue accumulates. Train too late (after fade) and elevated capacity is wasted. Yakovlev described this in the 1950s. Banister's fitness-fatigue models extended it: both fitness and fatigue elevate from training but decay at different rates.
When to use it
When timing the frequency of intense work sessions or challenging initiatives. When experiencing post-challenge fatigue and need to distinguish healthy recovery from problematic decline. When designing work-rest rhythms maximizing long-term performance. When diagnosing overtraining or burnout.
How it can help
Supercompensation provides a biological model for challenge-recovery rhythms in any domain. In product development, sprints too short accumulate organizational fatigue; too long and creative energy dissipates. The fitness-fatigue extension explains why performance feels worse immediately after intense work (fatigue masks fitness), but brief recovery reveals performance exceeding the previous baseline.
